TORONTO, ON, Canada (Monday, June 22, 2020): Engine Media/Torque Esports’ gaming live streaming data and analytics experts Stream Hatchet have revealed key data insights which may have influenced Microsoft to close its gaming streaming platform, Mixer.

Microsoft today revealed it would close Mixer and partner with Facebook Gaming for its future streaming efforts in this space.

“Microsoft’s decision makes perfect sense. Our Stream Hatchet data has shown the challenge Microsoft has been facing in growing its audience while at the same time Facebook Gaming has been growing in popularity,” Engine Media/Torque Esports COO Darcy Lorincz said.

Mixer Market Share

Mixer has been unable to gain a sizable amount of the market – from a high of 3.04% in May 2019 down to 1.57% last month according to Stream Hatchet.

Twitch The Leader

Twitch remains the leader of the gaming streaming market with 1.7 billion hours watched last month. This compared to only 41 million hours for Mixer

The Numbers

Twitch remains the strongest outlet at 1.7 billion hours of content watched compared to YouTube Gaming (553m), Facebook Gaming (294m) and Mixer (41m)

Mixer Growth

In the past 12 months, Mixer has only recorded a 2.03% growth in monthly hours watched – compared to 345% for Facebook Gaming – making the decision to align with Facebook by Microsoft look like the correct thing to do.

2.6 billion hours!

Last month Stream Hatchet reported that more than 2.6 billion hours of gaming content was watched on Twitch, Facebook Gaming, YouTube Gaming and Mixer combined.

Facebook Gaming

Launched in March, 2019, Facebook Gaming has been growing massively in monthly hours watched – up 429%. Comparatively – Mixer has grown 25.59%, Twitch 83% and YouTube Gaming 124.51%

Up 413%

The gaming streaming industry across these four platforms has grown 413% over the past three years.

12 month growth

Growth has accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gaming streaming numbers have increased 109% in the past 12 months

Streaming Stars

Upon signing to Mixer, Streamers “Ninja” and “Shroud” had a fall in monthly hours watched of 74% and 69% respectively.
